NAS Resurrection | Storage Migrations

Good morning all,

I am pleased to inform you that the NAS has survived the entirety of the period required to move the terabytes of data to the main server node where I have added 6 x 16TB Seagate Exos SAS drives in a RAID 6 configuration to house the bulk of the content.

Previously, media was accessed over the network via NFS mounts from the NAS to the server where Plex transcodes and presents the media for viewing. Now, all content is stored locally on the same server Plex is running on for the quickest possible access speeds.

The server consists of 3 seperate RAID arrays.

  • The OS – RAID 1
  • Movie Media – RAID 6
  • TV Media – RAID 6

In this configuration, temporary data such as incomplete downloads is written to the speedy solid state drives while the frequently accessed media is read benefited from the RAID 6 configurations on an individual level (Movie and TV media respectively) considering that they are separate arrays.

Currently, Plex is relocating the media in it’s new path and should be done in a reasonable amount of time. As per the tweet just sent out, due to inconsistencies between the folder states since yesterday evenings backup and today’s changes, I’ve opted to restore yesterday evening’s database so if you have anything you recently watched that is reporting as un-watched, that’s why.

Lastly, the plan for the NAS is to finally, fully trash and restore the OS to factory defaults at the cost of all the data on it.

Fortunately the media has all already been migrated so you won’t notice a thing. The hope is to narrow down if the mysterious power downs were in fact software rooted rather than a hardware issue as QNAP support is indicating. The fact that the NAS survived the entire migration process is amazing and baffling at the same time.

Here’s hoping things turn out with the NAS without needing to resort to an RMA of the main unit.

That’s all for now! I hope my little holiday gift in the form of reliable, uninterrupted entertainment has been as enjoyable to utilize as it has been to provide.
