Uninterruptible Power Supply Installed, now with less downtime!

Heres the scoop,

A few days ago while I wasn’t home, my room-mate indicated that we had several power surges. Like a fool, my 8 TB NAS had write caching was enabled which it specifically warns not to enable because there is a potential to corrupt the cache and damage sectors of the drive potentially causing data loss. Well, of course, one of my three terabyte drive crashed and I was playing with RAID 0 like a fool and lost the entire array. Now I run two 3 terabyte and 2 for terabyte drives in RAID 5 making for one disk redundancy. At the time I did not have a UPS since most of the commercial ones on the market cost a fortune and barely last 3 minutes considering what needs to be plugged in (my PC, one monitor, the NAS and the router/modem (since we use a DSL connection, power outages do not affect the DSL connection state therefore if your router/modem is still powered, you can continue to use the network no worries.

Fortunately I got my hands on a massive business use UPS that weighs 60 pounds, however I had the option to go for a 120 lb more substantial UPS however carrying it up to my apartment would have been a two person job. So for the time being I’m sticking with the 60 pounder which I was told was 3000 mVh if I’m not mistaken. It has six three prong power outlets and a serial connection (which does not want to co-operate with windows 8.1 but that’s not much of a loss.

Connected to the UPS as stated earlier is my PC, one monitor, the switch my Ethernet connections use, the DSL router/modem and my precious NAS meaning that in the event of a power surge substantial enough to invoke the UPS use, you shouldn’t notice a blip as my PC and the internet connection will remain active. If theres a longer time period of power unavailability I will be shutting down the system and likely update the page via my smartphone.

Hope you guys enjoy the greater stability.

P.S If the server is ever unavailable or down, first off check this site for any updates as to what may be going on then secondly, just wait a few minutes and things should return to normal. My PC goes through updates and restarts as needed so there are instances of unavailability however they do not last long.

As always, feel free to contact me. I will be adding a contact me form shortly to make communication easier.

Regards,
