A Huge Thanks and the Future

Hello everyone,

Well we did it! Thanks to the tremendous amount of support everyone has provided us we’ve been able to purchase not one, but two Seagate IronWolf NAS 4TB hard drives!

With this we will once again be able to begin to accumulate new media which we have yet to collect without deleting any of the current collection.

Currently the disks are about 40% migrated in terms of the RAID reorganizing itself to accommodate the new drives. Once they’re integrated we will have a grand total of roughly 64 TB of space in the NAS overall. This should be plenty of space for the time being however be aware that we have now completely filled the NAS including it’s two mSATA slots which are being utilized for the SSD cache acceleration feature.

This means that we can no longer simply buy more hard disks and make more space. You may be thinking, well, there are 10 TB hard drives available now, why not use them? Two factors are big roadblocks for this solution, cost (currently) and the RAID configuration which requires a minimum of 4 of the same size disks to optimally achieve a RAID 6 array meaning 4x the initial cost of one disk to get going with this route.

My goal is to eventually purchase a new server with many drive slots such as a Dell PowerEdge R720xd with 26 slots each which would be used as such. 2x solids state drives for the OS in a RAID 1 configuration with the remaining 24 disks in a RAID 6 configuration spread out through several volumes for optimal redundancy.

This is a big undertaking and means a bunch of configuration and money spent to shuffle things around and integrate the new server as the main since it would likely be faster than the current R610’s.

So keep the support coming, but thank you once again everyone who showed support by either sending in donations or simply telling us how much you love the server.

In terms of requests coming back online for everyone, there will be more to come on that later. Soon though!
