Inconsistent Connection to Server

Hey everyone,

It’s been busy moving the server over to the new hardware and isn’t over yet. Tomorrow (30th of November, 2015) the server should being automatically catching up on missed bits of media as currently the seeking for new media isn’t  taking place due to my physical absence from the server and a lack of configuration (I have been unavailable since Friday) which wasn’t possible until the RAID array finished processing and the content/files were finished being moved from the original system.

I’ve been observing an inconsistent connection to the server remotely and a subsequent crash related to the disconnection from the software point of view. Now this is my first time dealing with this level of hardware. So far I’ve run a Synology 4 bay NAS, an Asustor 6 bay NAS and now a 10-bay QNAP Turbo NAS.

Only now that files have completed transferring and the array has had a chance to fully create it’s necessary parity bits (2 in this case as it is running in a RAID 6 configuration for redundancy purposes) am I confident that the system is no longer in a constant state of flux and in a position to be observed from a troubleshooting point of view.

I hope that the issue is not a conflict between software running on the NAS or potentially an (unlikely) overburden on the hardware in a way that is causing crashes as uptime is highly valued by myself and I’m sure it’s important to you the users as well.

I will continue to monitor the issue and report back here and on Twitter. In a worst case scenario I will run a VM on the NAS for either all the software or a portion of it and split the work between the NAS OS and the VM. Either way this won’t go unresolved.

Stay tuned.
