Automated Content Updates (Currently Down) – Know the Moment its Available / Firmware Conundrum

Hey everyone,

Well last night this morning was interesting. There was a beta level update for the NAS that the server runs on and I said hey what the hell.

Big mistake.

Never go beta on critical systems.

Turns out the update was bogus for my model and didn’t apply so somehow it was able to apply and ended up totally nuking the kernel to the NAS firmware and it became totally unresponsive particularly on a network level. My theory is that it believed I had a NAS that fell under the qualifications for said update which did not include my model which is a 10 bay. When I looked at which versions were available for download, no 10 bay devices were mentioned which makes me wonder why the hell I was offered the update.

Anyways, after a risky and lengthy process of downgrading the system back to an appropriate firmware, things slipped back into normality without any data loss thankfully.

Now, onto the good news!

You may be aware of the Twitter account for Nobreaks which is @NobreaksPlex.

I’ve successfully enabled the NAS to report to said Twitter account when new content is added within a 60 second window of addition (to allow for the necessary metadata to be collected) via a simple tweet indicating the addition made and of course when. The account is protected so when you go to follow it you’ll need to be verified by myself first however I’m quick on the draw so don’t hold your breath too long.

The way I’ve set it up will ignore full sets of seasons individual episodes being posted as not to spam you however this will only be tested once I add a series or season of something. Note that Anime’s are not reported on the most recently added list in general as per some users requests therefore will not be posted on the timeline.

So if you wish to get LightSpeedUpdates as to whats new on the server go ahead and give me a follow!

Currently down, being investigated.
