Hardware Upgrades Incoming!

Hey everyone,

While I’ve had no problems with the existing hardware of the server, boasting a quad core 3.5 Ghz Xeon processor, 16 gigs of DDR3 expandable to 32 gigs and 10 bays compatible with 8 TB drives. It’s come to light that an opportunity to upgrade has dawned upon me.

I have purchased an REXP-1000-Pro SAS/SATA/SSD expansion for the existing NAS which will be connected via a SAS expansion card which will be installed into the server making it possible to (with the existing RAM specs of the server) expand to up to 400 raw TB of storage. In this case I’ll be starting with one expansion module however the SAS card will be able to accommodate up to 4.

I have also purchased two 128 GB mSATA solid state drives which will act as caches for reading from the NAS making the read performance significantly faster.

Now the last thing to upgrade would be the RAM which as stated earlier can be expanded to 32 GB however given the RAM usage I’ve observed over time, this upgrade is not necessary at this time but will eventually occur.

Update: Picture incoming soon but it turns out the expansion does not support adding disks to the existing main unit’s RAID array or storage pool but rather requires a new RAID array needs to be created which isn’t a problem because I’ll simply populate the new expansion with drives and utilize the new space in another RAID 6 array and link the share to the existing main unit then direct the software on the server to look at the other array.
